Chess Board

Using the chess board

Chess board assembly

It's not too difficult to construct a wooden chess board and the end result is very satisfying to use and impressive to look at. The base and individual squares are constructed from plywood. Four hardwood edging strips give a professional appearance and the completed board can be finished with a few coats of clear varnish.

Patience is required when cutting out the 64 plywood squares. Choose two contrasting shades of wood and align the grain of adjacent squares at right angles to emphasize the contrast. PVA glue or aliphatic resin is ideal for construction.
